Grampa Ray's Ginger Snap Cookies

Grampa increased amount of spices in original recipe to give the cookies more zing. Also increased cooking time. His recipe with changes are what you see here:

2 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 3/4 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
1 1/2 tsp ground ginger
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 cup shortening
1/4 cup butter
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg slightly beaten
1/4 cup light molasses

Preheat oven to 350. Sift flour with salt, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and baking soda. Cream shortening and butter until light and fluffy, gradually adding 1 cup sugar. Blend in egg, molasses, then flour mixture. Shape dough into 1 inch balls and roll in granulated sugar (not powdered sugar) Place on ungreased baking sheets and bake 15 min. Let stand a few minutes before removing from cooking sheets to flatten and harden. Makes approx. 4 doz. cookies.
